Downtown's Kangal Gallery adds retail space
Published: Monday, November 21, 2011, 7:30 AM
MOBILE, Alabama — For years I have heard friends in retail and interior design talk about going to "market" in
Atlanta for buying trips.
Fairly new in town, I had never visited Atlanta, and as one of the co-op artists in the newly retailing
Kangal Gallery, I jumped at the chance to tag along with owner Susan Kangal and her merchandising
guru, Sharon Hawkins, for a chance to see what it's all about, this "market" I had heard about for years.
In short, it is a pilgrimage to three high-rise buildings in the middle of Atlanta. For three days, we joined
the swarm of name-tagged women and men streaming down Peachtree Street as if to Mecca.

"After JD retired from 38 years of teaching, we spent two winters in Orange Beach. The area just kept calling us
back. We had a written list of what we were looking for in a retirement location, and this area met every
criterion," she said.
Hawkins grew up in rural central Illinois, where she attended a small country high school that had 68 in its
graduating class. Country living sparked her creative thinking to invent ways to entertain herself and lay the
foundation for her future. more...
